Some migrants flee violence. Some seek economic opportunity. And for some, the United States is their home, but our government has rescinded their legal right to be here.
Quixote Center has been partnering with the Franciscan Network for Migration (RFM) for more than 5 years to welcome migrants transiting Central America and Mexico with dignity, hospitality, and humanitarian assistance.
This fall, we are launching a new project, in partnership with the RFM La72 shelter located in Tenosique, Mexico. La72 is dedicated to comprehensive migrant welcoming and aid, including food, shelter, clothing and hygiene supplies, and psychological, legal, and medical care. La 72 is located in one of the most dangerous migrant corridors, near the border with Guatemala in the State of Tabasco. Most recently they have been receiving migrants fleeing Honduras due to violence and cartel activity. They also receive some of the people the US government is deporting into Mexico.
La 72 is a small, private, non-profit operating on a shoestring budget. Their overarching concern is making sure they have enough food to feed everyone walking through their doors. They are located on a large plot of underutilized land. With our support, and with the goal of financial self-sufficiency, La 72 will turn its unused land into a livestock production facility. The production facility will provide:
- Food Sovereignty: Ensures the immediate and continuous supply of high-value protein (milk, meat and eggs) for the community kitchen, providing nutrition in the face of funding shortages and inflation.
- Financial Mitigation: Transforms current expenditures on food into an investment into reproducible assets, allowing the optimization of diminishing funds and redirecting funding to the critical areas of human rights defense, legal assistance and psychological care.
- Sustainability and Improved Social Fabric: It promotes a circular economy model within the shelter, which also functions as a space for dignified occupation and technical learning for the people housed.
La 72 sees moving towards self-sustainability as the necessary route to keep their doors open with the dignity, quality and protection that the migrant population deserves. Quixote Center is proud to collaborate with them to realize this dream.
Thanks to each of you for your support. We could not do this work without you.
