Beginning on Monday, March 11, Quixote center will be leading a group of nine advocates to bear witness to the migrant experience in Panama.
Migrants face extreme conditions crossing through Panama’s treacherous Darien Gap; and yet desperation led 500,000 migrants to pass through last year alone.
Quixote Center and our partners from the Franciscan Migration Network (FMN) will accompany our colleagues from Witness at the Border, Las Americas, American Immigration Council, International Refugee Assistance Project, and Immigrant Defenders Law Center. Together we will visit the government reception centers in the Darien, meet with and hear the stories of migrants, experience the work of welcome and hospitality from our Panama FMN partners, and learn more about the Panama context from other civil society organizations.
The purpose of the trip is to convey our solidarity with migrants and to bear witness to their experience. Quixote Center’s role is to facilitate an opportunity for our US-based colleagues to learn first-hand and report about the Darien and the Panama context, and to lift up and support the life-saving work of our partners in Panama.
We will post updates on our social media accounts during the week and publish a report upon our return. You can follow us on Facebook and Instagram.
Thank you for your support, which makes this work possible.
