Keeping Children in School in Gros Morne

Fri, 02/27/2026 - 10:47am by Fred Schick

Haiti's ongoing security crisis has forced 1.4 million people to flee their homes, with many displaced families seeking refuge in Gros Morne. In response, the Caritas LaChandlé Parish stepped up by organizing a cash assistance program reaching 350 displaced families, thanks in large part to your generous contributions.

Between April and December 2025, Quixote Center supporters raised over $100,000 towards this emergency campaign. For many parents, protecting their children from gang violence meant one clear priority: keeping them in school. With up to 50% of Haitian gang members estimated to be minors, education is a powerful line of defense.

The LaChandlé parish identified 100 students whose annual school fees ranged from $70 to $390. Thanks to this initiative, every one of these children from 1st grade to 11th grade had their tuition fully covered, allowing them to stay in school and out of harm's way.

Looking ahead, long-term stability is essential. For education to remain possible year after year, parents must be able to generate reliable income. We are now working closely with LaChandlé Parish to help families with school-aged children start small businesses and stabilize their livelihoods. The remaining funds from this campaign have been dedicated to this vital next step.

None of this would be possible without you. Your generosity is helping families protect their children, invest in their futures, and build resilience in the face of crisis. Thank you for standing with the displaced children in Gros Morne.
