Bio
Patty Adams is part of the emerging Honduras Accompaniment Project with the Quixote Center. This project emerged as a direct response to the request by the nonviolent Honduran People's Front of Resistance Against the Coup d'etat, a multi-sector, nationwide network of grassroots organizations and individuals who are struggling against the military-economic overthrow of the democratically-elected president of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya. They seek Zelaya's restoration to power as the first step in restoring rule of law, an essential precursor to the process they've been seeking for many years: the creation of a Constituent Assembly to draft a new, truly democratic Constitution.
Patty has lived in Central America for the better part of the last eight years and works on the transformation of trauma and conflict through nonviolence, especially the use of yoga and therapeutic bodywork as well as third-party nonviolent conflict intervention. She is amazed by the nonvioelnt Honduran struggle for a new society. Cheque!

TEGUCIGALPA, HONDURAS: The streets are empty, as are the polling places. The majority of activity outside of the polling places is at the kiosks whose existence--replete with illegal election propagando, balloons, and cheerful and helpful citizens--is meant to encourage and motivate people to vote in the face of what is already a clearly successful people's boycott of elections.

TORTURE: SYSTEMATIC REPRESSION AFTER THE COUP D'ETAT
The political military coup in Honduras, which took place on June 28, 2009, has special characteristics which differentiate it from past coups in this country and in the rest of Latin America.
The first component is the participation of the old followers of the National Security Doctrine that have continued practicing torture with impunity since the 80's and who are the principle military and police advisors of the de facto regime.

Democratically-elected Honduran President Manuel Zelaya, deposed by a military coup on June 28, returned clandestinely to Tegucigalpa, appearing at the Brazilian Embassy around mid-day on Monday, September 21. As word of his arrival spread, thousands of Hondurans who’ve been calling for his return began to assemble outside the Embassy to celebrate, catch a glimpse, and show their support.
