What follows is a partial listing of human rights violations during the months of January and February 2010. Honduran Human rights organizations have expressed concerns about a marked increase in selective targeting of people and communities active in the resistance movement and asked for vigilance on the part of the international community.Feb.Union Leader murdered in Honduras
On February 3, Vanessa Zepeda, a 29 year old nurse and SITRAIHASS union leader (Honduran Social Security Institute) left her home at 2pm. At approximately 6:30 pm, her lifeless body was dumped out of a vehicle in Loarque, a neighborhood well known for resistance movement activities. Vanessa had received repeated death threats linked to her activism in the resistance movement which had been registered by human rights organizations. She was the mother of three children; the youngest is 4 months old.

Unified Peasant Movement Alert: More are captured
January 13, 2010 - At 1:30pm, a military and police patrol captured three members of the Unified Peasant Movement of Aguan along the Aguan river. The men are members of the Buenos Amigos Cooperative in the municipality of Trujillo. According to farmers in the zone, there are approximately 1000 armed men, military and paramilitary, under the command of Coronel Dagoberto Melgar occupying the area. He is suspected of selling protection services to large African palm plantation owners in the region.

Major Earthquake Hits Haiti, Report from Gros Morne
A powerful 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti Tuesday afternoon around 5:00 p.m. The epicenter was just 10 miles west of Port au Prince, Haiti's most densely populated city. Initial reports indicate major damage to infrastructure including collapse of hospitals, schools and government buildings. Phone service is out in much of the country making communication, damage assessment and response efforts difficult.
Farmers Block the Border
Hundreds of small farmers from the "Agrarian Platform" blocked the border between Guatemala and Honduras since yesterday in protest of the elections in Honduras which they consider to be illegal. The farmers blocked all transport from crossing the border, creating long lines of vehicles waiting to cross and resulting in economic losses. The blockade was lifted today.

7:00pm Friday, Zelaya's team rejects proposal of Micheletti
According to one of the negotiators of President Zelaya, he has just announced that he was rejecting as “absolutely inacceptable” the proposal of the de facto government that it be the Supreme Court which decides his restitution. At the same time they announced that the dialogue would continue.

EU will prepare coercive measures against members of coup regime
The EU announced that it is determined to sustain pressure on the Micheletti government until a solution is reached to the crisis in Honduras. The EU will prepare a list of coercive measures to be applied to members of Michelettis cabinent. It is also considering if the countries of the EU will recognize the November elections as legitimate.
Another day, more denunciations in Honduras
Every day brings more acts of threats and repression. Today a denunciation was reported to the Honduran Human Rights group COFADEH that an Italian-Argentinean artist named Maria Luisa Fiaso, who is in currently in the country with the Artistic group Zapayasos, was threatened twice between last Friday night and Saturday.
Results of the negotiations of Tuesday Oct. 13th
This morning, Juan Barahona, who represented the national civic committee against the coup and served as one of the three negotiators assigned to represent President Zelaya, resigned from the negotiations. He had been asked to sign on indicating his agreement with a statement that renounced the call for a Constituent Assembly. He indicated that he was never and would never be in favor of such a statement. He was replaced by Rodil Rivera, an advisor to President Zelaya.
The International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH) asks the EU for strong measures
The International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH) today asked that the European Union “act in a consistent way” against the coup in Honduras and asked that the Foreign Ministers of Twenty Six countries to not recognize the electoral process underway. FIDH, in an open letter to the EU “again invited that the EU expel all of the members of the diplomatic corps of Honduras who have aided the coup d’état and that they establish migratory restrictions for any officials or business people who have aided the de facto government” of Roberto Micheletti.
Latest news from the State Department and Secretary General Insulza
Micheletti told the OAS mission yesterday that there will be elections in November unless you invade us. He also said that “you don’t know all of the truth and you don’t want to know it.” As the negotiations began, riot police attacked a group of people who were marching from the U.S. to the Guatemalan Embassy.
The Spokesperson for the State Department Philip Crowley said that “time is running out” to resolve the Central American crisis and the time to sign an agreement “is now”. He said that the message of the U.S.
Foreign Minister of Honduras Patricia Rodas comments on the Return of Zelaya to Honduras
Patricia Rodas said in an interview yesterday that the presence of Zelaya in Honduran territory has untangled the situation in Honduras. If President Zelaya weren’t in Honduras, the regime would never have received another OAS mission in the country. If President Zelaya weren’t in Honduras, the regime would not be looking for resolution; they are now acknowledging the profound errors which have taken them one hundred days to admit. I think this initiative is moving forward because Zelaya is inside the country
Micheletti calls the ouster of Zelaya an error
Coup leader Micheletti surprised the media yesterday when he recognized that the decisión to take President Zelaya out of the country was an error. “Definitely it is a decision that certain sectors took, for which they will be punished, in compliance with the law.” he said.
UNESCO Director General preocupied about limits to freedom of expression
The Director General of UNESCO, Koichiro Matsuura expressed his preoccupation at the suspension of Civil Liberties in Honduras, especially the freedom of expression. He said that freedom of expression is “a fundamental human right which must be preserved.” if a solution to the crisis will be “lasting and acceptable for all.”
Decree suspending Civil Liberties will be revoked beginning tomorrow
De-facto president Micheletti said today that he would repeal the decree he had issued more than a week ago which has severely limited civil rights in Honduras. The decree to repeal the initial decree will go into effect tomorrow, Tuesday October 6th.
Marches will continue today
The Resistance Front against the coup in Honduras agreed yesterday to continue the protests against the coup regime, ignoring the governmental decree which restricts individual guarantees. About 300 people who were in the assembly reaffirmed their commitment to continuing the manifestations which they have been carrying out since June 28th, when the coup d’état ousted President Manuel Zelaya.
Another death as a result of the repression
On Saturday October 3rd, Olga Osiris Ucles, 35 year old mother of 4 children died as a result of a respiratory crisis she suffered after having been exposed to tear gas during a pacific demonstration in front of Radio Globo on Wednesday September 30.
More repression today in Honduras
Yesterday at least three people who had been arrested last Tuesday in front of the Brazilian Embassy had hearings today. Included was Augustina Flores, the sister of Berta Casares, who according to medical reports is in a delicate state of health. In spite of her serious health issues, she was sent to the women’s prison until her trial.
Radio Globo surrounded by 200 soldiers
Right now we have gotten word that 200 soldiers from the Honduran military are surrounding the station of Radio Globo. They have managed to continue transmitting via internet, in spite of their equipment being confiscated earlier this week.
Campesinos removed from National Agrarian Institute
At 5:30am this morning 55 campesinos who had been occupying the National Agrarian Institute (INA) were removed from INA and arrested. Right now Berta Oliva from COFEDH is at CODE 7, the facility where the campesinos are being detained, but has not yet been permitted entry
Honduran army begins assault on poor communities
Cobra Batallions of the Honduran army have violently assaulted homes in the poor commuities of Altos del Viera, Manchén y los Barrios El Bosque, Hato, Suyapa, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Colonia Kennedy, Bendeck, Travesía y Residencial Morazán, Colonia Divanna, Altos de la Divanna, Pedregal, Centroamérica, Altos de los Milagros. Cobra units have fired bullets, tear gas canisters and pepper spray into homes where children, pregnant women and elderly are at particular risk.
Nephew of Radio Globo owner murdered by Honduran security forces
The nephew of Radio Globo owner, Alejandro Villatoro, was murdered this weekend. Thirty five year old Marco Antonio Caceres was shot by Honduran security forces in the Central Park of Tegucigalpa.
Wendy Avila, 24, is killed by police through exposure to toxic gases in Brazilian Embassy
University student Wendy Avila, 24, died of an asthma attack as a result of exposure to toxic gases thrown by the police in the Brazilian Embassy.
US dissents from general OAS opinion, lays blame for coup government's violence on Zelaya
The US accused the deposed President of Honduras Manuel Zelaya of aggravating the institutional crisis in his country by returning.
This statement contrasted sharply with the majority of the members of the Permanent Council of American States, who condemned the recent violence of the coup government against the nationwide protests.

Coup Regime takes Channel 36 and Radio Globo off the air
On Monday morning, September 28th the Honduran military seized the installations of Radio Globo and Canal 36. News transmission has been suspended after the defacto regime published a decree eliminating constitutional rights to freedom of expression, movement and assembly. Today is the 3 month anniversary of the coup and massive protests are planned.

Human Rights Organization condemns Honduran Military use of chemical agents in Brazilian Embassy
The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) strongly condemns the operation by agents of the Honduran de facto regime in the area of the Brazil Embassy in Tegucigalpa. According to the information received, security forces of the de facto regime surrounded the Brazilian Embassy and threw unidentified toxic gases, causing intoxications, bleeding, vomiting and dizziness to the persons inside the diplomatic building.

March in Tegucigalpa Today
There is a "white march" planned for today in Tegucigalpa. Reports are that military infiltrators who are experts in assault and assasination are in the march with the intent of killing Zelaya. Our delegation will try to "observe" this march.
An Act of War?
Brazil has announced that if the coup regime does not stop the sound terrorism (detonation of loud booms that provoke hysteria) and lift the military cordon they will consider it an act of war.

Resistance as well as violent repression continue
Thousands gathered today at the Universidad Pedagógica to renew their resistance. There are still reports of shootings, beatings, torture, and illegal detainment. The president of INFOP was shot in the head and is gravely wounded. Partners report that acoustic devices loud enough to cause damage to the ears are being used outside the Brazilian embassy.
Quixote Center delegation hears explosions, sees tear gas and smoke from burning tires
Today the Quixote Center Accompaniment Delegation struggled in the midst of a state of siege to reach hospitals where wounded are being treated and to the stadium where detained are being held prisoners. Tonight they report that they can hear explosions from protests that are being repressed in neighboring barrios and tear gas and smoke from burning tires is filling the air.

The Frente Naciónal Contra el Gólpe reports that about five police stations have been taken by the Resistance. Meanwhile, in the Kennedy, in Tegucigalpa, the police are using live bullets and teargas against the crowds. Our delegation is in a nearby neighborhood and can hear chanting - "Adelante, Adelante - la lucha es constante. Forward - forward - the struggle is constant."
Two thousand detained en route to Tegucigalpa
According to COSIBAH, the Honduran banana worker federation, there are some two thousand people detained in front of the Dippsa gas station in the Villa Nueva community.
COSIBAH was informed that the military stopped these citizens while they were traveling to the capital from the surrounding towns to show their support for the returned president.

COFADEH reports that 150 people have taken refuge in their office after being violently repressed in front of the Brazilian Embassy during this morning's attack. Some have been beaten and are wounded. COFADEH fears that they will be arrested at any moment and says that there are refugees in other places as well without food and water.

Reports of Wounded and Tortured from Chochi Sosa Stadium
Hundreds of people have been detained in the Chochi Sosa Stadium in Tegucigalpa which is being used as a massive detention center.
Honduran Prisoners Taken to Stadium
In a move calculated to remind dissidents of the torture that took place in the Santiago stadium in 1973 where, among other things, Víctor Jara was tortured and killed, the nonviolent protestors from all the jails and prisons in Honduras have been rounded up and taken to the stadium.
Human Rights Org. COFADEH Attacked
The human rights organization, COFADEH, with which we work closely, has just reported that their offices have been attacked with tear gas. Prisoners are being are being taken to the national stadium. The Brazilian Embassy is militarized and being buzzed with helicopter over flights.
Troops moving in on Brazilian Embassy
We've heard from our partners within the Brazilian Embassy that Honduran troops have cordoned off a 6 block perimeter around the Brazilian Embassy. They've cut communications lines and have tear-gassed those inside and nearby.
